China’s Hisense Aims to Surpass Sony, Be No. 3 TV Maker Worldwide – Businessweek

Most Americans shopping for a TV have heard of Panasonic (6752:JP), Sharp (6753:JP), and Sony (SNE), the big three Japanese brands. By the time they buy, most have seen models from South Korea’s Samsung (005930:KS) and LG (003550:KS), the global leaders. More obscure in the U.S. are these companies’ Chinese counterparts, such as Skyworth (751:HK), TCL, Changhong (600839:CH), and Hisense (600060:CH). Yet Hisense has grown into the No. 4 seller of TVs worldwide, according to DisplaySearch, an arm of market researcher NPD Group. It’s targeting early adopters in the U.S. as it seeks to become No. 3.
